Cathedral St.Gallen

St.Gallen Cathedral is both the parish church of the cathedral parish and the diocesan church of the diocese of St.Gallen, founded in 1847. It stands where the Irish wandering monk Gallus built a hermitage in 612. The cathedral and the baroque monastery complex were built in the middle of the 18th century. In 1805, the newly founded canton of St.Gallen abolished the monastery and transferred the administration of the ecclesiastical properties to the Catholic denomination. The cathedral, together with the monastery precinct, especially the monastery library and the monastery archives, form the core of the Unesco World Heritage Site.
