Älggi Alp / geographical center of the Sc
Description
Älggi is the largest Sachsler Alp; it lies at around 1650 m above sea level and consists of a formerly marshy plateau, where the alpine huts and the chapel stand, and extensive hillside pastures. The name Älggi is derived from the root word Gau, which means flatland or plain. The first part of the name could be an abbreviation of Alp or Allmend.
Älggialp is the geographical center of Switzerland, which was determined using the latest measuring methods to mark the 150th anniversary of the Swiss topography.
Since 2003, the Swiss Person of the Year, who is chosen annually by Swiss television, has been honoured here with an entry on a commemorative plaque.
